Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing these questions (such as mysticism or mythology) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on reasoned argument. Philosophy comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία [philosophia], which literally translates to "love of wisdom".

What are your suggestions in understanding fully the subject Philosophy?
Q. I'm taking up Philosophy subject and until now, I cannot understand fully the whole point of studying Philosophy. Please help me how to appreciate my philosophy.

A. "We are all born as philosophers, we only cease to be one when we think we are right, but I'm probably wrong." I'm into philosophy as a hobby, and to me it could be the act of opening your mind to limitless possibilities, like asking questions without the need for answers. To the pessimist, this could be seen as asking questions that don't need to be asked. To the optimist, it may be viewed as the ultimate way of finding out what the human mind has to offer, without the need to actually identify its boundaries. I think you have the makings to be a great philosopher, you are asking how to fully understand a subject that will probably never be fully understood, there could always be a new page to write. This all seems ironic that I'm telling… [cont.]

How does Christianity impact philosophy if they have nothing to do with eachother?
Q. So I was told Christianity has helped mold philosophy but I cant understand how that is when they are 2 totally different things. Didnt philosophy occur waaay before Chiristianity, or is it the other way around? But really how does Christianity or "religion" tie into philosophy? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anything. I'm not trying to form an opinion; I'm simply just asking for understanding.

A. The purported goal of both is to seek truth. Personally I think Christianity doesn't seek truth so much as declare what it thinks it is, but that's beside the point. Prior to the 19th century most philosophies rooted all truths in natural truth, i.e. God. The ideas that loving your neighbor is good, greed is bad, sexual promiscuity is bad, etc. have no objective truth, they are simply declared to be basic truths by Christianity. Philosophies were molded around these ideas for centuries. It wasn't really until the existentialists that we started to break free of the template and start to come up with other bases for basic truths, or lack of basic truths.

What philosophy do you have that makes your life worth living?
Q. My philosophy on life is that we should leave it better than when we got here. In other words we're put on this world to help our fellow man. What do you think makes life worth living despite all of the problems and strife that we have to endure???

A. try and understand everything you can but realize that no matter how hard you try you will fall short but be happy with the knowledge you were able to obtain with the time you had. their are times when you will shine and times when you will fade its not giving up during the time in between and after that makes the difference

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

Sourced

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance." Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
