A. Since you asked for specifics, I have listed a few accomplishments below. National Research Council Canada's engineer George Klein invented the Storable Tubular Extendable Member (or STEM, for short). It has been used on most of the early and current manned and unmanned space missions. National Research Council Canada's Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory is designing and building a highly specialized supercomputer to upgrade and improve the world's largest radio telescope that is located in the USA. National Research Council Canada's scientists invented and developed the Canadarm and the Space Vision System that is has been used on NASA space shuttle missions and the International Space Station Canadian engineer Eugene Maynard,… [cont.]

How did the early explorations of people like Magellan, Columbus, etc. contribute to the differences of the US?
Q. I couldn't fit most of the question... How did the early explorations of people like Magellan, Columbus, etc. contribute to the vast differences of the United States?
Asked by Sapphy - Sun May 31 19:24:06 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They came from different countries and 'discovered' different parts of the US. So Spanish settlers settled in Spanish areas, English settled in English areas, etc. so even before we were the US, the people who lived here were influenced bt different cultures. There were Spanish, English, Dutch and French influences, and then, of course, you had the Native American influence.

A. I had about the same project lol.. Kidney dialysis machines were developed as a result of a NASA developed chemical process that could remove toxic waste from used dialysis fluid. As a medical CAT scanner searches the human body for tumors or other abnormalities, the industrial version, or advanced computed tomography inspection system, finds imperfections in aerospace structures and components, such as castings, rocket motors and nozzles. A cardiovascular conditioner developed for astronauts in space led to the development of a physical therapy and athletic development machine used by football teams, sports clinics and medical rehabilitation centers. A. Positive effects: -gave the people access to more resources -provided better routes to other places(especially the sea routes)which saved time and money -exploreres found new species of plants and animals never seen before -more land to establish industries?? Negative effects: -the need for the new resources caused conflicts between countries -ecosystems were disturbed -the people living there were removed and killed or they were forced to adapt to the explorers' culture -some animals became extinct Hope that helps...

Has anyone ever done University of Dreams or Career Explorations?
Q. I'm trying to find more info about these companies? Both are in good standing with BBB.

A. I participated in the University of Dreams program in New York a few years ago. I had a great time and would recommend it to you. It was expensive, so I took out a loan, but considering what they provided- my housing, my meals, and expensive events (overnight trip to atlantic city, nice dinner cruise in the hudson, tickets to events) it was worth it to me, especially what I paid for college. The internships they work with are incredible. I didn't use much of their career preparation material, but it was cool having someone introduce me to hiring managers prior to the interview. I haven't heard of Career Explorations, but all things considered, I wouldn't trade my University of Dreams experience for anything as I made really great friends… [cont.]

Q. What long term effects oil explorations have on earth? How the hollow voids after oil is extracted get filled ?
Asked by skdos - Fri Feb 1 05:50:39 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When oil is extracted from the earth it does not leave behind hollow voids, the oil is contained within the rock itself. As to what replaces it, in most circumstances it will water that seeps up from beneath the oil that fills the rocks. In some circumstances Carbon Dioxide can be re-injected into the wells that can both help force more oil out, and prevent it being released to the atmosphere. As for long term effects of the extraction, the science behind oil drilling is very similar to that of drilling water wells. There is no structural instability left behind, as you are not leaving any voids. The long term effects of oil are more to do with the emissions it produces when burnt, or the potential damage done above ground by the… [cont.]

Q. Why were wealthy monarchs more likely to finance overseas explorations?

A. Often they were looking for gold. As was the case when the Spaniards first explored the New World. Once the English colonized the New World, the "old world siphoned off the natural resources that we had to offer here, especially wood. In Europe they had already descimated most of the trees and were in dire need of building materials other than stone. Also, Parliament loved to tax the colonists, which was a big reason fo our revolution. Remember the slogan, "No taxation without representation?" The colonists were being taxed by England on so many things but we had no representatives in the English Parliament.

A. In 2005 Shenzhou 6 went into orbit being the second manned space flight by the Chinese - the third nation to undertake manned space exploration. Last month the Japanese announced they were putting together a fix to get the Hayabusa space craft to return to earth. Hayabusa landed on the asteroid Itokawa and is the first spacecraft to land and take off from an asteroid. It is bringing back thousands of photographs and maybe some physical samples. Three of its four ion engines have failed, but it is hoped to bring it back to earth. NASA's Spirit rover is stuck in sand on Mars. In attempting to free it, the wheels span, and broke through the crust, revealing sulfate deposits below - a sure sign of deposition by water. This happened in… [cont.]

A. A positive result is a matter of opinion. In my opinion, so far there hasn't been any positive result when you consider the billions of dollars spent looking "out there" when the money should have been spent resolving more worldly problems "down here". The knowlege gained in space exploration is far too costly. It hasn't helped mankind achieve anything except satisfy some of our curiosities.

A. Go to the library and find a book called connections it was published about 20 years ago. Fascinating read on the links between discoveries and explorations. For a school project try tracing one line of discovery and invention as far back as you can. Along the lines of what discoveries were necessary to invent the modern day computer? Then what discoveries were necessary to discover those things and on back as far as you can.

A. I know that the hydrothermal vent organisms use chemosynthesis...that is they use the chemicals coming out of the vent ( sulfur compounds are prominant from memory) rather than using light ( photosyntheis). I also know that the extremophiles...I assume its the halophiles ( salt loving) bacteria...which are the archeabacteria are quite different from other bacteria and cells. However linking them to the question ...hmm dredging memories from uni many years ago...can't remember..its on the tip of my tongue...i might have something to do with the endosymbiotic bacteria that are thought to be the origin of the mitochondria ( and chloroplasts) and that they produced energy on their own without sunlight ( not chloroplasts obviously) and… [cont.]

A. We have been enjoying the advantages of satellites for years; communications satellites, weather satellites, GPS like On-Star and Tom-Tom, cell phones, satellite TV (and Cable), Internet Service. Without them, our entire communications network would be gone. None of this would have been possible without space exploration. As far as space exploration, it takes a long time and a lot of experimentation and exploration to get to where we will be able to travel to planets outside the solar system or the galaxy. Humans are explorers. If not for past explorers, we would all still be in Africa. That's a pretty small place to support nearly 7 billion people. We are overpopulating the Earth and polluting it, destroying our own habitat. It… [cont.]
