I have to pick a topic and write a theoretical proposal for molecular biology, any ideas?
Q. I have to be able to list all of the research tools I would need and discuss why I would use them. Such as PCR, RFLP... I don't need to cure cancer or anything, just be able to propose a topic and a hypothesis for determining biosynthetic pathways or sequencing or whatever...

A. Propose finding the gene responsible for a given disease? Linkage analysis determines the critical region the gene is in (not really mol bio so don't need too much detail) but basically the molecular biologists would do the genotyping for various disease markers by PCR (amplify) and size determination by gel electrophoresis. Find the recombinants and narrow down your region of interest. Then find the known genes in that region (bioinformatics... yawn) and sequence them to screen for mutations. Next you would model the possible effects of any mutations on the transcripts (RNA level) and translations (proteins). If you found something likely to have an effect at the level of protein, you want to express it in a suitable model, probably an… [cont.]
