How much should it cost to replace a 2001 Nissan Sentra expansion valve?
Q. Is this even what I should be replacing? I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra that has under 85000 miles and as of this summer the AC has stopped working. Air still blows out, but it is not cool as the compressor is not turning on. If you open the hood and take a listen, you hear no difference from when the AC is on or not. Innitially, I tried using an AC charger kit and obviously that was not the problem. Then I thought that the compressor needed to be replaced, but I think it is much too early for that to go on the car. I brought it to a mechanic that specializes in foreign cars and he said that it was the expansion valve that needed to be replaced and that it would cost $440.00. I've found the part online for $40 - does labor really need… [cont.]

A. Always get a second opinion, but it really could be that high. Depending on your location (hourly labor charges vary) the labor could be something like $65 and hour. On many cars this valve is located in the dashboard, in a box, connected to the a/c cooling lines. So this basically means, taking the coolant out of the lines with a recovery machine, taking apart the dash (in the area around the glovebox) and taking the part out, replacement of the part, pumping the system down to a vacumn to get any air out, and then refilling the coolant. This is a pretty intensive procedure, but I really cant figure out how the mechanic would determine that it was the expansion valve from what you wrote. If you tried a recharge kit, did you… [cont.]

When the refrigerant goes throught the expansion valve in an air-con or fridge, it evaporates. Why?
Q. I know that when it goes through the compressor, pressure increases and thus it condenses back into liquid, making it hotter. But how does it get to a gas in the first place? The refrigerant goes through the expansion valve and decreases in pressure, and evaporates as a result. Why does it evaporate in lower pressure? Thanks in advance. I really appreciate any help. Will give 10 points.
Asked by AFL Fanatic - Mon Apr 28 04:33:05 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The boiling temperature of the coolant is lower on the low pressure side of the valve. It boils for the same reason that warm water boils when you pump the air out of its container. If the coolant is not already warm enough to boil when it comes out of the valve, it soon absorbs enough heat from the cooling coils to make it boil. Going thru the compressor again raises the pressure so that the boiling point is again higher than the coolant's temperature. Compression also raises the temperature of the coolant.

How do I replace the expansion valve on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Q. I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a straight 6 cyl. motor. I need to replace the expansion valve on the A/C system. Is this something I can do myself, or should I take it to the mechanic? any help would be appreciated.

A. How do you know you need the expansion valve? It is something you can do yourself, however you will need the refridgerant removed from the system before doing so, and then you will need it evacuated and recharged when done. Simply follow the lines under the hood to the firewall. The expansion valve is bolted there between the lines and the evaporator (which commonly fails on these).

how can i determined if the expansion valve opening is too large or too small?
Q. I have this expansion valve that is manually operated type and we are using it in ice block making. I am not so sure of the size of opening to achieve the full capacity of the evaporator.
Asked by jong - Wed Jul 7 23:04:50 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The size of the expansion valve is determined by the engineer that designed the system. You should look for an equipment tab on the machine and try contacting their technical support department. They should be able to advise you of the proper size of the expansion valve. The expansion valve itself will have a logo most likely allowing you know the manufacturer of the valve. Contact them, and they will be able to tell you the approximate number of turns to open the valve.

A. First you will have to pump all of the refrigerant into the compressor or evacuate the system. You will need the following tools: Vaccuum Pump Refrigerant Gauges and Hoses flaring tool or tubing cutter and torch and solder *** Take your allen wrench and shut the valve on the liquid line. Watch your gauges and when it is done shut off the suction side and kill the power. Go to Sporlan to see how to replace the valve. Good luck.

How to replace A/C expansion valve on 2003 Chrysler Town & Country?
Q. The A/C in our Chrysler Town & Country has suddenly stopped blowing cold. The compressor is working as the pressure looks good, but no cold air from the front or rear units. My guess is that the expansion valve has blocked and needs to be replaced along with the drier. Any directions on how to get to the expansion valve would be appreciated.
Asked by superchargedtruck - Sun Jun 22 09:08:10 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most Chrysler expansion valves are located at the firewall connection where the two lines attach. Evacuate the refrigerant, then remove the line connection at the firewall (pass side) remove two torx head bolts that secure the expansion valve to the evaporator.Try to be as quick as possible replacing parts as any moisture (humidity) will enter the system. After sealing the system, you MUST draw out all the air w/ a vacuum pump to remove any moisture and of course air, this allows the moisture to boil off and prevents air from mixing with the new refrigerant. Modern recovery machines measure the lube oil that is removed with the refrigerant, so replace only what has been removed, too much oil can cause issues.

A. Shouldn't have an expansion valve. There should be an orifice tube in the refrigeration line before it enters evaporator usually near firewall.

What is involved in replacing an expansion valve on my 1998 Toyota 4Runner?
Q. I am pretty mechanically inclined so I want to do this myself as I can only afford the part and not the labor. I understand it is evacuating the A/C system, replacing the valve, and then charging again. I do not know where the valve is, specifically and if it requires certain industry tools. I have replaced CV joints, done valve jobs, brakes, etc...(A little background, so you can determine if I can do this.) Thanks!

A. the expansion valve is bolted to and mounted on the evaporator housing. you have to remove the glove box completely. the evap is held in by about 4-5 bolts. look for them carefully. disconnect everything that is in front of it. there should be a cable that runs in front of the evap. make sure you re-install that exactly the same way you took it off. after you remove all the bolts holding on to the evap, you just need to use a little force and pull the whole thing out. the expansion valve is a rectangular block of aluminium. make sure you replace ALL O-ring seals and lubbed them with clean A/C oil (PAG oil). hope this helps

What could it be? Its a 2000 Altima
Asked by newyorktocountry - Thu Oct 5 00:11:10 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The only way to really check an expansion valve is by reading the high and low side pressures. Normally if an expansion valve is bad, it will actually pull the low side into a vacuum. Common practice when replacing a compressor is to also change the drier and the expansion device. Luckily for you, the removal of the evaporator case, which houses the expansion valve, is not that bad. It is feasable that if the compressor was bad, that ir could have sent debris through the system causing restrictions in certain components. Flush ALL the lines, evaporator and condenser, then install the new parts listed above. Also ensure that the proper amount of oil is reinstalled in the system as the fushing will remove it. Good luck

Does a vehicle's A/C expansion valve make a normal "hissing" noise?
Q. I have an 03' IS300, still under warranty and trying to work out any issues before warranty expires. NOT when car was new, but starting about 6 months ago, I started hearing a faint, high pitch "hissing" noise from inside the cabin when the A/C is on. You can only hear it when the fan is on "low" AND A/C is ON. Aside from the noise, A/C works fine. Recently it seems to be slightly louder and I can hear it at fan setting 2 of 4. After a bit of research, I have read that some have interpreted this as a normal expansion valve noise and others say slightly low refrigerant or leak. I can't say I have noticed this noise on other cars but this car is pretty quiet and allows you to notice stuff like that. When it gets too annoying, I… [cont.]

A. I had a similar problem with a dodge dakota. It was a harmonic sound that I was hearing. Turning the fan to a higher speed changed the pitch of the harmonic so that I no longer noticed the sound. A leaf had got stuck in the blower wheel and was causing the harmonic. How the leaf got there is still a mystery. Good luck

A. the indirect or (passive) has no moving or mechanical parts and if your talking air conditioning this (valve) is more of a filter the direct or (mechanical) has actual moving parts which are actuated by internal pressures

A. You do not say anything about what is the temperature at the vents. When the pressure drops on the high side if the compressor is disengaged or not or what pressures are on the high side and low at the same time, 35 and 200?? 20 and 150??? 35 and 150??? 20 and 200?? so... so little information and you don't even say if the a/c is not colling right, so I pulled out my cristal ball and guess what,,, couldn't see anything

A. The term "throttling valve" makes things sound very technical doesn't it? The difference between a "throttling valve" and any other valve is minimal. One might suggest a throttling valve has a better ability to vary it's restriction when compared to a fast opening valve such as a flat faced globe valve, a ball valve or a gate valve, but from a thermodynamic perspective, the first law can be applied to all these valves in exactly the same way. So from a thermodynamic perspective there is no significant difference. If you draw a control volume around the valve which is flowing at steady state, you can make the following observations: 1) There is no stored mass or energy inside the control volume (ie: dU = 0) 2) There is no work done by or… [cont.]

A. Towards the firewall next the evaporator, follow the lines. The accumulator is usually the drier as well. There might be an orifice instead of the expansion valve. i would get a manual and think twice about servicing the a/c system yourself. This can be very dangerous it you don't know what you're doing.
