Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions (such as mysticism, myth, or the arts) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "Philosophy" comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία [philosophia], which literally means "love of wisdom".

What philosophy is centered around the goal of understanding science and the universe?
Q. What philosophy puts discovery of the universe and science as the meaning of life?
Asked by Lydia - Sun Apr 13 16:24:33 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Let me have a go at this. To understand science, you would have to go for the specific science itself. To understand the Universe, you would have to go for Astronomy or Cosmology, may be Astrophysics, but if you say the fullness of human experience then all philosophies attempt that, perhaps in different ways. Yes I am assuming the sciences are a form of philosophy with experimental results as criteria for verisimilitude. As to the meaning of life, Art exposes it to you, Religion gives you answers (except Zen Buddhism that does not say that exists), but Science describes fact not meaning. Hope you are confused.

What can a philosophy major do in the military?
Q. First and foremost, I am a philosopher and I want to philosophize for the remainder of my life, but I feel that the military can be very useful in nurturing discipline of mind and body, developing leadership qualities, and gaining world experience. What can I do that will fit with my interest in philosophy? I'm not saying that the military can help me with philosophy. I'm asking where in the military will my abstract/analytic thinking be useful?

What makes the process of writing philosophy papers different than that of other disciplines?
Q. Everyone says that writing about philosophy is a 'different sort of writing', but I'm not entirely sure what it meant by that. Of course, you're writing about philosophical texts and issues, but how is the actual process of writing any different than any other sort of academic writing?
Asked by kai_maguire - Sun Dec 7 17:50:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is a different sort of writing because, more so than any other branch of the humanities, it is based around (in fact, entirely grounded upon) logic and maths. You cannot (or at least should not) persaude your reader with rhetoric. You must be infinitely careful, consistent and detailed in your definitions. Almost every statement should be reducable to a logical equation. In essence, a philosophy paper is really just an elaborate mathematical equation, with words substituted for numbers. In short, very different to any other discipline.

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

Sourced

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance." Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
